The
Magic of Technology
As a teacher of computer programming at Marshfield High School, I became aware that children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, High-Functioning Autism, and children with similar challenges demonstrate a high aptitude and deep interest in computing. These children can possess extraordinary gifts of concentration and creativity, along with a natural proclivity for writing software. Learning computer programming through game making is a great way for these kids and young adults to expand upon their natural skills and have fun at the same time. Although computer programming is not usually thought of as a social activity, there is a social component when done in an informal classroom environment when students with like abilities and interests work together on similar projects. The real MAGIC of Technology is the attention and positive recognition these kids get from creating and circulating their computer games. It is a phenomenon, I have seen over and over again. Later in life, these abilities can lead to career opportunities in the software and the emerging game making industry. The software industry is known for aggressively seeking out such talent and for fostering a nontraditional workplace. There are career opportunities open in the software engineering business for gifted and talented students from these communities.
I offer the combined skills of a current high school computer programming teacher, along with 20 years of industry experience as a software engineer. I’ve been trained as an Instructional Technologist at Harvard University, and I have a Master’s in Computer Science from SUNY at Binghamton. I began tutoring, in Object Oriented programming, when I met a young man diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. This extraordinary young man went on to take and excel in advanced programming courses. This experience has been my inspiration for helping other young students reach for the Magic in their lives.
